What Do You Do?

When your soul is screaming what do you do? How do you cope? Do you let it pass in private? Or do you cry for help? If you cry for help does it work? Do you get acknowledgement? Or do you end up feeling invisible?

When your heart is pumping so fast that it almost beats out of your chest what do you do? Do you take some deep breaths and trust that all is good? Or do you grab your best friend? What if you don’t have a best friend? Do you ask to speak with your mother or sister? What about your brother or your father? Do they listen? Do they know how your heart works and do they hold it with care?

When your mind is breaking down what do you do? Do you turn to the solitude of your craft and create until your bones are tired? Or do you take your heavy head to therapy? Does it do anything? Does the therapist make you feel empowered even though you might be broker than broke?

When you feel like a fucking waste of space what do you do? How do you heal? Do you ever heal? God only knows, I guess?

A Deck of Cards

My head and heart, my life, feels like a tossed deck of cards. Thoughts, feelings, and activities fly up in the air and float everywhere.

They are too hard to organize so I just watch them flutter through the air in a big, spread out mass.

Someone catch them, please? Help me put the pieces back together. Why must we be on our own to organize our deck of cards?

The deck seems to grow as time goes on. It starts out as a regular 52-card deck, but then we reach adulthood. We are required to “leave the nest” and fend for ourselves. So the deck becomes a 104-card deck. It doubles in size.

Emotions, thoughts, dreams, desires, and requirements grow as life moves on, then from 104 to 208. Cards stack up. We do our best to manage it all but it’s a lot for one being so eventually we sit back and watch the deck collapse into the air again.

I always drop my deck of cards. It’s mostly a deck of thoughts and feelings that feel too big for me to hold and life feels off, and I feel insignificant that the deck gets jostled far too often. It explodes far too easily, but it’s something I’ve realized I’ve been working on all my life. I’ve seen improvement, but sometimes I get so bored and restless that the progress isn’t good enough for me. I’m unsatisfied with my life and myself that the cards go up again!

Just take a breath and watch them go. Take another breath and crack a smile, as the chaos flies above you.

Just take a breath and cry, if you need to. Take another breath and know that what goes up must come down. Storms rage, but at some point, even the storm gets tired of going. So it must stop. When it does subside breathe again, collect your deck of cards, and play on. That’s all you can do!

Dear World: An Artistic Letter

“See me!” says the world.

“Love me with all your heart!” says the world.

“How do I get it?” asks the Ego, “What I get isn’t good enough and it doesn’t last. I need something more. I need to feel like it’s okay I have a heartbeat”, it says.

To breathe in this big, fast-paced world seems to be embarrassing and uncalled for. It’s a challenge to catch one’s breath and when one does catch their breath it is as if someone or something sucker-punches it out of them.

Everyone is passive-aggressively begging, pleading, and scraping for attention and love. Social media is the biggest, fastest, and easiest avenue to get some semblance of attention.

“I’m sick and it sucks!” someone can easily write. Then all their friends can write back with well wishes.

“I’m depressed and life is no fun!” someone can easily write and all their friends can send heartfelt comments.

But some, perhaps most, don’t get what they need. So the begging continues.

“See me!” says the world.

“Love me with all your heart!” It begs.

“How do I get it?” asks the Ego, “I need to feel good enough. Does love ever last?” It says.

Anxiety is intense mental overwhelm. Depression is intense emotional overwhelm. Both are signs that the person needs to live more authentically. The world isn’t helping them. The people they know are not available and they are too backed up to feel they can help themselves.

Unless they decide, “This is not my authentic self. This is not my authentic truth. I can be better. I want to be better. I can live to thrive. I no longer wish to practice dying. I want to live!”

Essentially that’s what we do, right? There’s an unconscious, universal thought that we all live to die. So the thought never crosses our minds that we are allowed to thrive!

I want to find what makes my heartbeat so strongly that no earthly thought can deter it from moving me forward. I want to find refuge in my own breath that no human opinion can make me feel embarrassed or wrong for doing what comes naturally to me. If I have to live forever in isolation to get it then that’s ok! At least I’ll be able to connect to my Source without feeling like the world is in the way or that it clouds my sense of authenticity.

Dear world, you try, but maybe you try too hard. Maybe you push too much sometimes. Sometimes you’re too forceful and too loud and too stressed out. Maybe you are too afraid to look weak that you try to be strong, but it’s too hard to maintain so you begin to explode and implode at the same time. There’s never enough time to process anything and therefore never enough time to re-evaluate yourself. So you keep going with only half a tank of gas.

You burn the candle at both ends, but it’s fine because vulnerability is more frightening than listening to what you need, which is to fucking slow down and breathe. We need to get back in touch with ourselves and to listen to others without our own agendas getting in the way. That is what we, the world, desperately need!

BUT it’s going to take so much work. It’s going to take so much releasing and it’s going to take so much awareness. Dear world, you have to REALLY want it! And if I’m being honest, I’m not sure you can do it. Progress has been made, but one step takes about 100 years to complete. Each opinion contradicts the other. So, dear world, make a choice! What do you really want? Once you’ve decided, then unite more! Please!

Dare

Dare to be bold. Dare to be outspoken. Dare to not fit. Dare to be different.

Dare to be gentle. Dare to be authentic. Dare to breathe with ease and passion.

Dare. Dare to live with valor and vulnerability. Dare to be vulnerable in a world that can’t. Dare to feel emotion in a world that is afraid of it. Dare to control your emotion with poise and a sense of grace.

Dare to fight. Dare to fight fire with water. Fire can be hot, attractive and biting, but water is strong, varying in temperature, charming, and aggressive.

Water can knock you down and slap you around at the same time, but it can also be gentle and flexible. Water can let go of agenda. Fire maintains its agenda. Fire doesn’t easily compromise.

So dare to fight fire with water. Be the Mother Theresa of the world. Dare to be the Martin Luther King Jr. of the earth. Dare to be who you are.

Dare to love openly. Dare to be your kind of beautiful. Dare to be your kind of strong. Dare to be passionate. Dare to defy normality. Dare to create your kind of normal.

Dare to embrace. Dare to be observant. Dare to be brave. Dare to see in a different light. Dare to share what you see in a safe place. Dare to make a safe place by blazing a trail. Dare to be a trailblazer.

Dare to write your truth. Dare to sing what you feel. Dare to dance how you like. Dare to be free of your own inner critic. Dare to be released from other’s opinions. Dare to think your thoughts.

Dare to share. Dare to speak.

Dare to help.

Dare to live. Dare to be.

Dare to be daring.

Light Befriends the Darkness

Why does Darkness feel so much stronger than Light? Darkness is colorless. Light is so much brighter than Darkness, and yet Darkness feels stronger. Perhaps Darkness seems stronger because it’s so wild. It broods, it’s restless and it loves to thrash.

Darkness thrashes while Light is soft. Light comes into the room gently, like the sun that spills in through the window and tickles your face.  Morning always comes in gracefully while Night just appears.

Light has its intense moments. It can get hot and very bright, but it’s steady and quiet. Darkness is loud and loves to listen to himself, even though he might claim that he’s unhappy, he still loves to listen to himself.

He loves to compete with Light. “Oh yeah! Well look how crazy I can get.”

Thunder cracks like a cannon ball exploding. Lightning shatters the trees. Birds scatter in terror, and rain slaps the ground with such force that even the ground cries.

“What do you think of that?” Darkness chuckles, “I bet you can’t do that!”

Light takes a breath, “No, I can’t.” It admits, “But that’s okay.”

Light shines gently on the ground, and spreads out to the trees and the sky. The birds flock to their nests and sing praises. The ground smiles and the trees clap their hands.

Darkness is envious of Light and all the happy attention she gets. So Darkness begins to brood. He broods all day, trying not to cry, but eventually he can’t take all the joy that has fluttered about all day. So rain begins to cover the ground, it floods nests, and thunder shakes the trees.

“Why doesn’t anybody like ME?” He roars.

Light softly breaks through the ash colored clouds. She whispers, “Because…” Light slowly caresses one of the clouds, “Sometimes there is more strength in being kind then in gaining attention.”

The thunder subsides. Darkness listens to his friend.

Light comforted a little more. She whispered, “And sometimes vulnerability is more powerful then thrashing, crashing or breaking things.”

The lightning stopped. The birds were still and the trees held their breath.

“And sometimes humility and love are more important then brooding in fear.” Light whispered one last time, “Let us see your authentic self. There’s more to you then the storm.”

The rain ceased and the clouds broke. A sweet breeze glided through the air. Birds tweeted in delight. The ground was beside himself, and the trees danced with great joy!

“Welcome home.” Light said to her friend, “We missed you!”
